Al Wahda edge out Al Wasl in five-goal thriller

Al Wahda earned their second win in a row as they beat Al Wasl 3-2 at Al Nahyan Stadium in matchweek 5 of the Arabian Gulf League on Sunday.

After having a goal being ruled out for offside in the fifth minutes, Al Wahda took the lead in the 10th minute when Khalil Ibrahim’s cross found Lucas Pimenta in front of goal and the Brazilian tapped home.

Ibrahim assisted a second goal in the 27th minute after sending a defence-splitting pass that put Tim Matavz in a one-on-one situation with Al Wasl keeper Humaid Abdalla and the former made no mistake slotting the ball in the back of the net.

Right before the break, Ronaldo Mendes missed a golden chance to open the scoring for Al Wasl with his strike hitting the side netting.

Al Wasl had a good start to the second half and reduced the deficit six minutes after the restart when Salem Al Azizi cross was met by a diving header from Joao Figueiredo that nestled into the back of the net.

The Clarets’ response came four minutes later through Paul-José M'Poku, who fired home a long-strike to restore his side’s two-goal lead.

Matavz scored another goal in the 71st minute, but his strike was ruled out for offside after reviewing the VAR.

It was Al Wasl, however, who found the back of the net four minutes later. An error from Yahya Al Ghassani saw the ball fall to goalscorer Figueiredo inside box and the Brazilian forward lobbed it over the outrushing Al Wahda keeper to reduce the deficit again.

The VAR was involved once more as a fourth goal from Pimenta was ruled out for an offside 11 minutes from time.

Al Wahda won their third match of the season and raised their tally to 10 points, while Al Wasl succumbed to their third defeat of the season and stood at six points.
