Goals from Isaac Thelin and Nicolas Gimenez handed Bani Yas a 2-0 away win over Ajman in matchweek 18 of ADNOC Pro League at Rashid bin Saeed Stadium on Saturday.
Bani Yas started the game strongly and were rewarded for their attacking intent with an early penalty after Suhail Al Noobi was pulled down inside the box.
Thelin stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to open the scoring after just eight minutes.
The hosts needed 32 minutes to pose their first real threat on Bani Yas keeper Fahad Al Dhanhani, when Bilal Yousif launched a powerful right-footed shot from about 35 yards, but he watched his strike was brilliantly denied by the 30-year-old Emirati goalkeeper.
Eight minutes after the restart, the visitors came close to doubling their tally when Al Noobi met Mohamed Rashid’s cross with a powerful header which hit the post.
Bani Yas cemented their lead in the 73rd minute, when Khamis Al Hammadi picked the ball on the right-wing and cut inside before setting up Gimenez who side-footed into the right-bottom corner of the net.
Ajman searched for a way to half the deficit and they came close to doing so when Boubacarr Trawally beat the wall and the goalkeeper with a superb free-kick five minutes from the time, but his effort hit the upright.
The victory takes Bani Yas’ tally to 25 points in seventh place, while Ajman remain sixth with 25 points on the League table.
