Shabab Al Ahli survive a late scare to beat Emirates 2-1

Goals from returning Federico Cartabia and new signing Thomas Olsen secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Shabab Al Ahli over Emirates at Rashid Stadium in the ADNOC Pro League on Sunday.

It took the hosts only 13 minutes to open the scoring when Guilherme da Silva sent in a low cross to Cartabia, who curled a low effort beating the outstretched hands of Emirates goalkeeper Abdulla Ibrahim to net his first goal with Shabab Al Ahli in 323 days, having last found the back of the net against Al Dhafra in March 2021.

Two minutes after the restart, Olsen marked his Shabab Al Ahli debut with a goal, doubling the scoring for his side.

Harib Suhail dribbled inside the penalty area to find unmarked Olsen, who easily tapped in from six yards. The 30-year-old striker became the first Norwegian to score a goal in the ADNOC Pro League.

Emirates pulled one back when Edarlyn Reyes unleashed a powerful left-footed shot from the outside of the box beyond the reach of Majed Naser humaid and into the corner of the net in the 71st minute, becoming the first Dominican to score in the history of the competition.

Shabab Al Ahli were awarded a penalty kick two minutes from time after Cartabia was pulled down in the box.

The Argentine stepped up but watched his effort from the spot hit the crossbar.

The result means Shabab Al Ahli jumped to third place with 26 points, while Emirates remain bottom with only five points.
