Shabab Al Ahli maintained their perfect start to the AFC Champions League Elite after defeating Iran’s Esteghlal 2-0 at Rashid Stadium on Tuesday, securing their third consecutive win in the competition.
Second-half goals from Mateus Lima and Juan Alvina Bezerra earned Al Fursan another three points, taking their tally to nine from three matches in the league stage.
The result moved Shabab Al Ahli into second place in the standings, level on points with leaders Al Ain, who remain ahead on goal difference. Esteghlal stayed fifth with six points.
Shabab Al Ahli controlled much of the contest and created the better attacking opportunities, although they had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock.
Mateus Lima opened the scoring in the 69th minute after receiving a well-placed pass from Sardar Azmoun inside the penalty area. Lima struck the ball first-time to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Azmoun played another decisive role in the 84th minute, providing his second assist of the evening as Juan Alvina Bezerra doubled Shabab Al Ahli's advantage.
Bezerra converted the opportunity to put the result beyond Esteghlal's reach and complete a convincing home performance.
Despite Esteghlal's attempts to respond, Shabab Al Ahli maintained control in the closing stages and preserved their clean sheet.
The victory continued an impressive opening to the continental campaign for the Dubai club, who have now collected the maximum nine points available from their first three league-stage fixtures.
Azmoun's two assists proved particularly important against his compatriots, with the striker contributing directly to both goals.
