Matchweek 15 roundup: Al Jazira close gap on leaders Sharjah

Matchweek 15 of the Arabian Gulf League saw Al Jazira close the gap on leaders Sharjah, who dropped two valuable points in the title race.

 

In-form Omar Khrbin cancelled out Luan Pereira’s opener as Sharjah were held to a 1-1 draw with Al Wahda at Al Nahyan Stadium. Despite the draw, the King remained at the top on 36 points. However, they are now three points only above Al Jazira who earned an impressive 5-1 win over Al Dhafra at Hamdan Bin Zayed Stadium in a game that saw Ali Mabkhout net a hat-trick.

 

Bani Yas came from behind to beat Fujairah 2-1 at home. Douglas Coutinho opened the scoring before Hassan Al Moharrami and Joao Pedro netted second half goals to maintain Bani Yas’ their third-place spot and raise their tally to 29 points.

 

They continue to sit two points above Al Nasr who earned a late victory over Khorfakkan at Al Maktoum Stadium, The Blues opening goal from Toze was cancelled out by Raphael Guimaraes before Mehdi Abeid grabbed a late winner to snatch the three points.

 

Shabab Al Ahli continued their match forward and grabbed a comfortable 4-1 win over Al Ain at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, which left them in fifth place on 25 points, one above the Boss who remain winless for the second straight game.

 

Al Wasl also didn’t seal their 2-1 win over Hatta until the 7th minute of injury time when Fabio Lima found the back of the net to hand the home side a valuable win that put them in eighth place, tied on 23 points with seventh-placed Al Wahda.

 

Ittihad Kalba returned to winning ways and ended Ajman’s two-game winning run with a 2-1 victory at home. The home side had to wait until the ninth minute of injury time to seal the victory, thanks to a late goal from Peniel Mlapa. The Tigers now sit ninth on 22 points, which leaves a six-point gap with Al Dhafra in 10th place.

 

Khorfakkan sit 11th on 15 points, six above Ajman in 12th place and eight above Fujairah. Hatta continue to linger at the bottom with two points only after succumbing to their 13th defeat of the season.
