Format was announced following a meeting with all 14 clubs
The UAE Pro League held a meeting via video conferencing with the professional clubs where it approved changes to the Pro League Cup format that would determine the final rankings of all teams participating in the competition.
The meeting discussed changes to the competition for the 2021-2022 season, following the UAEPL’s coordination meetings with the broadcasting channels regarding the same topic, as part of their joint efforts to develop Emirati football according to the 2020-2030 strategic plan.
The meeting focused on making changes to the format in regards to the teams eliminated from the knockout stage, while maintaining the competition’s current format and retaining the successes of the 2020-2021 season. It also discussed the possibility of holding all matches outside the FIFA international days, raising the competition’s market value, and introducing additional matches for teams eliminated from the preliminary rounds to keep them active during the ADNOC Pro League break.
The meeting saw participation from representatives of all 14 clubs and reviewed the latest updates and changes to the competition following the related discussions at the technical development workshop for the 2021-2022 season.
The clubs agreed that teams eliminated from each round would compete in a single round-robin format to determine their final rankings. Therefore, all 6 teams that fail to advance to the quarter-final will compete in a single round-robin format, as each team will face the other five teams to decide places 9 to 14. All four teams that fail to advance to the semi-final will compete in a single round-robin format to determine places 5 to 8, while the two teams who fail to secure a spot in the final will face each other in the third-place playoff.
