Matchweek 5 roundup: Sharjah extend winning streak

Matchweek 5 of the Arabian Gulf League saw Sharjah extend their winning streak to five games to maintain their position at the top of the standings ahead of the international break.

 

The King's impressive start to the 2020-21 league campaign continued with a 1-0 win over Al Jazira, thanks to Igor Coronado’s winner. Meanwhile, Al Jazira dropped to 7th place on eight points after succumbing to their second defeat of the season.

 

Al Nasr defeated Hatta 3-0 to claim their fourth win of the season and raise their tally to 13 points in second place. On the other hand, this marked Hatta’s fourth defeat of the 2020-21 campaign, leaving them at the bottom of the table on one point only.

 

Bani Yas are still trying to return to winning ways as they played out a goalless draw with Ajman to sit third on 10 points. The Oranges, however, collected a valuable point from their second draw of the season and now sit in 11th place.

 

Al Wahda are tied on 10 points with Bani Yas but sit fourth on goal difference. Matchweek 5 saw them claim a tough 3-2 win over Al Wasl, who dropped to ninth place on six points.

 

Shabab Al Ahli are now fifth with nine points after they were forced to settle to a 2-2 draw with Khorfakkan away from home. The match saw Khorfakkan collect their first point of the season and move to 13th spot.

 

After returning to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Al Dhafra, Al Ain moved to sixth place with eight points. Meanwhile, Al Dhafra’s second straight defeat saw them drop to eighth place with seven points.

 

Ittihad Kalba are now 10th and have six points after beating Fujairah 1-0. Meanwhile, Fujairah remain winless in 12th place on one point only.

 

Matchweek 5 in numbers

 

Sharjah hold the best offensive performance in the league so far with 14 goals, while Ajman are the worst after scoring one goal only. Meanwhile, Hatta have the worst defensive record after conceding 16 goals in five games, while Al Nasr maintained another clean sheet, having conceded only one goal in the league so far.

 

As a total of 19 goals were scored in all seven games, matchweek 5 saw an average of 2.7 goals per game, with Sharjah’s Welliton Soares maintaining his position at the top of the goalscoring charts with six goals.

 

Al Ain, Al Wahda and Kalba earned home wins while Al Nasr and Sharjah won away from home.
