Arabian Gulf League review: Goalkeepers with most saves in 2020-21 season

As the 2020-21 Arabian Gulf League season has come to an end, we take a look at some of the most interesting statistics and performances. While the spotlight is often directed to the frontline and goalscorers, some goalkeepers put eye-catching performances during the recently-concluded campaign.

Having a good goalkeeper is a key to any football side, and several shot-stoppers carved out a place of their own in their teams this season. There were several candidates, but we have zeroed in on the top performers based on statistics. And while numbers can’t be solely used to evaluate goalkeepers, they definitely help in painting a clearer picture.

Ajman keeper Ali AlHosani topped the list of keepers with the most saves in the season with 94 saves in 25 games. The 33-year-old’s steady performance was key to Ajman’s top-flight survival. In addition, he kept three clean sheets, made 134 successful passes in the opposition half, and won 80% of his aerial duels.

He was followed by Al Jazira's Ali Khaseif, who made 87 saves in 23 appearances. He also finished off second in the top clean sheets list with a total of 10 clean sheets throughout the campaign. The veteran keeper, who guided Al Jazira to the league title, won 90% of his aerial duels and completed 24 successful passes in the opposition half.

Fujairah’s Abdulla AlTamimi occupied third place in the list of the best save makers with 83 saves in 21 matches. The 28-year-old kept three clean sheets, won 75% of his aerial duels, and made 44 successful passes in the opposition half.

Fahad AlDhanhani didn’t miss any of Bani Yas’s 26 league games and came in fourth place with 78 saves. He kept the most clean sheets (11) as his side conceded the least number of goals in the campaign. Besides providing two key passes, the 29-year-old had a 100% success rate in aerial duels and completed 125 successful passes in the opposition half.

Al Dhafra’s Khaled AlSenani rounded up the top five list as he made 76 saves and kept three clean sheets despite featuring in 17 games only. He won 75% of his aerial duels and made 153 successful passes in the opposition half.
