Arabian Gulf League review: Top scoring defenders in 2020-21 season

There’s no doubt that strikers and forwards are the fans’ favorites and the ones that usually make headlines for their goals and strikes. However, a goalscoring defender is something every team would love to have, and the 2020-21 Arabian Gulf League season boasted some goalscoring defenders that deserved the spotlight after netting 44 goals out of a total of 566 goals.

Shabab Al Ahli’s Yousef Jaber Naser was the best goalscoring defender in the season. He netted five goals in 16 appearances only after missing most of the second half of the season for injury. The 36-year-old netted four goals from inside the box (including a penalty and a headed goal) and one from outside the area. Naser also made 16 key passes, provided one assist, and made 340 successful passes in the opposition half.

Gianluca Muniz of Al Wahda came in second place after netting three goals in 18 appearances. The Brazilian defender scored two goals from outside the box and one from inside the area. The 20-year-old had a total of 13 shots, including seven on target, and made 11 key passes and 186 successful passes in the opposition half.

Fujairah’s Mohamed Mustafa also had three (headed) goals to his name in 20 matches. The 21-year-old, who is registered in the UAE Resident category, had 10 shots, 7 of which were on target, and made 126 successful passes in the opposition half.

Al Wasl’s Hueglo Neris, Al Dhafra’s Mohamed Ismail AlJunaibi, Sharjah’s Shaheen Abdalla, Khalifa AlHammadi of Al Jazira, and Al Ain’s Tsukasa Shiotani scored two goals each.
