Al Wahda Defeat Al Wakrah on Thrilling Penalties to Claim Challenge Cup Title

Al Mahdi Mukhtar missed a crucial penalty for Al Wakrah as Al Wahda won a thrilling penalty shootout to claim the Challenge Cup title on the last day of the UAE-Qatar Super Cup's second edition.

 

 

 

 

UAE Pro League Chairman, First Vice President of the UAE Football Association, His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Al Jneibi, crowns Al Wahda with the Challenge Cup title, in the presence of Hani Ballan, CEO of the Qatar Stars, Nasser Al Hajri, Chief Marketing Officer at Aspire Zone Foundation, His Excellency Ali Saeed Al Mazrouei, Chairman of Al Wahda Club, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Fahad Al Thani, Head of the Youth Sector at Al Wakrah Club, and Mr. Ramez Rafiq, General Manager of AE Coin.

 

 

 

 

It was a thrilling game as Al Wakrah dominated the play in the first half and took the lead, while Al Wahda started the second half as a different team and managed to level the scoring before deciding the victory on penalties.

 

 

 

Aïssa Laïdouni and Al Mahdi Mukhtar missed two penalties for the Qatari side to help Al Wahda maintain the Emirati clubs' superiority in the second edition of the UAE-Qatar Super Cup.

 

 

 

Aïssa Laïdouni put Al Wakrah in front after 26 minutes when he picked up Abdelkarim Fadlalla's cross from a corner and fired the ball across the goal from a tight angle.

 

 

 

A minute later, Hamdy Fathy unleashed a long-range strike, but his effort went wide. Omar Khribin came close to restoring the parity when he curled a superb shot from a free-kick, but Al Wakrah's goalkeeper was the hero as he parried the ball away in the 37th minute.

 

 

 

Facundo Daniel missed a crucial goal-scoring opportunity, but Al Wakrah's goalkeeper was the hero again after making a brilliant save to Daniel's clinical finish from the six-yard box in the 50th minute.

 

 

One minute after the hour-mark, Omar Khribin struck a magnificent first-time volley to restore the parity for Al Wahda.
