Al Wahda Down Al Jazira in Derby Comeback

Al Wahda came away from Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium with a valuable 2-1 derby win over Al Jazira in Matchweek 25 of the ADNOC Pro League on Saturday.

Ali Mabkhout opened the scoring in style at the quarter-hour mark after dancing his way around the Al Wahda defence before calmly placing the ball from inside the box, leaving goalkeeper Mohammed Al Shamsi rooted to the spot.

Al Wahda restored parity in the 59th minute as Joao Pedro rose highest to head home Khalil Al Hammadi’s cross from the right flank.

A mere minute later, Portuguese winger Fabio Martins completed the visitors’ comeback, arriving late at the far post to tuck home Omar Khribin’s cross from the right and seal the win for Al Wahda.

The two goals meant Al Wahda’s front three; Pedro (14), Khribin (14), and Martins (9) combined for 76% of the side’s goals in the ADNOC Pro League this season.

Al Wahda’s victory puts them third with 52 points, seven points ahead of their Abu Dhabi rivals who sit fourth with 45.
