Al Wasl and Sharjah face off at Zabeel Stadium on Thursday in one of the headline fixtures of Matchweek five in the ADNOC Pro League.
Al Wasl come into the clash in fifth place with seven points from two wins, one draw, and one defeat. Sharjah sit 10th with four points after one win, one draw, and two losses.
The history between the two clubs is finely balanced. In 30 league meetings, Al Wasl have won 13 times, Sharjah 10, with seven matches ending in draws. Across those encounters, Al Wasl have scored 47 goals and Sharjah 43, underlining the rivalry’s competitiveness.
Sharjah enter with their weakest start to a season since 2017–2018, when they collected just one point in their opening four matches. Even so, they won on their last trip to Zabeel, though they have only managed back-to-back victories there once, in 2010 and 2011.
This fixture has a reputation for drama. Twenty-one goals have come from penalties, 13 for Sharjah and eight for Al Wasl. September meetings have also produced decisive results: Sharjah won in 2013 and 2021, while Al Wasl took victory in 2017.
Al Wasl’s long-range shooting has often been decisive in this matchup. Seven of their last 16 goals against Sharjah at Zabeel came from outside the box, including three of the most recent four.
Individual stars add further intrigue. Fabio Lima is the all-time top scorer in this rivalry with 12 goals, including his first-ever ADNOC Pro League strike against Sharjah in October 2014.
Caio Lucas has also enjoyed success with 11 goal contributions (seven goals and four assists), while Igor Coronado has registered four involvements in six meetings with Al Wasl.
