Abu Dhabi Derby Heats Up As Al Jazira and Al Wahda Battle for Early Supremacy

All eyes will be on Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium on Wednesday, where Al Jazira and Al Wahda face off at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in one of the most anticipated fixtures of Matchweek 5 in the ADNOC Pro League.

The clash is among the capital’s most heated derbies, carrying huge weight both in the stands and on the pitch. With ambitions closely aligned this season, Al Wahda sit third on 8 points, just one ahead of fourth-placed Al Jazira.

The history between these two sides is rich and closely contested. In 32 league meetings, Al Wahda hold a slight advantage with 13 wins to Al Jazira’s 9, while 10 matches have ended in draws.

Historically, Al Jazira enjoyed dominance at home, unbeaten in their first nine league games against Al Wahda at this venue, but recent form tells a different story, with just one win in their last seven home derbies, suffering five defeats along the way.

Al Wahda enter the contest with an imposing record: unbeaten in their last 16 league matches (nine wins, seven draws) and without defeat in their last 19 meetings across all competitions.

Al Jazira, meanwhile, boast the strongest defensive record in the league right now, keeping three consecutive clean sheets, their best run since the 2016-17 campaign when they managed six in a row.

Al Wahda have also had the upper hand in recent meetings, unbeaten in their last nine league clashes with Al Jazira (six wins, three draws).

Al Wahda have 23 wins, 16 draws and 25 losses in 64 combined capital derbies against Al Ain and Al Jazira, while Al Jazira’s tally is almost identical (22 wins, 17 draws, 25 defeats).

Both sides have been lively in the final third this season. Al Jazira lead the league for total shots (68), while Al Wahda top the rankings for shots on target (23). Jazira players have also recorded the most touches inside the box (125), just ahead of Al Wahda (102).

Syrian forward Omar Khribin is always a key player for Al Wahda with five goal involvements in his last five games against Al Jazira (two goals, three assists).

Historically, Sebastián Tagliabué remains the derby’s record scorer with 17 goals, while it is remarkable that all of Al Wahda’s last 37 goals against Al Jazira have come from inside the penalty.
